While the London-based Institute of Islamic Banking and Insurance celebrated its most productive year yet, the chief guest at this year's dinner, the President of the prestigious Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank, highlighted the bank's role in promoting world-wide Islamic banking.

Speaking at the Institute's second annual dinner, Michael Clode a partner at world-renowned legal firm, Freshfields in London, encouraged the creation and development of new models and financial instruments to cope with the unique demands of the Islamic system of finance, rather than adapting existing modes. He also called for a more 'consistent interpretation of the Shariah'.

The Islamic Foundation, in co-operation with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and Loughborough University of Technology, organised its fourth Intensive Orientation and Training Course on Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance at its Markfield Conference Centre, Leicestershire, from 24-27 October 1996.
