A
unique subject-wise collection of 'Fatwas' (legal opinions),
relating to the operations of Islamic banks.
The
Compendium is based on Fatwas issued by the religious
boards of Islamic banks.
It
took two years to collect, classify and translate the
Fatwas from Arabic to English. The Arabic and English
texts appear in the Compendium side by side.
The
translation, classification and presentation of the material
is by Yusuf Talal Delorenzo, an outstanding Islamic
scholar with mastery of both the English and Arabic languages.
The
Compendium is the first collection of legal rulings on
the operations of Islamic banks that have been put together
and will become a unique form of reference for Islamic
banks, lawyers, accountants, researchers, academic and
business organisations on this topic.
"This
volume will be treated as an asset of great value."
Jeremy Martin
Trowers & Hamlins

Western
bankers and finance specialists interested in Islamic
banking have often been confused over the precise
interpretations of the Shariah Law despite the increasing
standardisation of Islamic financial instruments.
The rulings of particular Shariah advisors have frequently
been misunderstood, and concerns have been expressed
over the lack of consistency between the practices
of different institutions offering financial services.
The
publication for the first time of the legal opinions
sought by leading Islamic banks is a very welcome
development, as it will help resolve some of these
issues.
It brings unprecedented clarity and transparency.
The
publication should help ensure that there is even
greater respect for Islamic banking practices from
conventional bankers, and it will facilitate greater
understanding by Western financial analysts of what
exactly Islamic banking involves.
Muazzam
Ali, the Chairman of the London based Institute of
Islamic Banking and Insurance, deserves to be congratulated
for the publication of this extremely useful volume
that will serve as a standard source of legal reference
for many years to come.
Review by
Professor Rodney Wilson

"
your
Institute is to be commended for having commissioned this
work. To the extent I have read and heard discussions about
various aspects of Islamic banking, it has sometimes seemed
to me that some of the discussants had little greater understanding
of the Islamic Law which underpins it than I do. One thinks
of post-graduate students in my case, of course; previously
I had little idea of what members of the Ulema would say
about such issues.
But now I do have a record of what they say, for which I
will be eternally grateful. These opinions lie at the heart
of Islamic Banking; they provide the flesh to the outlines
set out in the Quran and the Hadith."
Professor
Trevor E Gambling, Professor Emeritus, Birmingham University,
UK

"This
will be of great interest to me and is also, I believe,
of great value to all involved in Islamic Banking. The Institute
deserves to be congratulated for the preparation of this
excellent work, which must have taken a great deal of time
and effort to produce.
Justin (Turner) and I are now looking through the Compendium
to try to identify answers to a number of points. We have
already found the answer to a question which has been puzzling
us for some time, and our initial reaction is that the book
is laid out in a most user friendly manner."
