POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA - updated January 2008

To tackle the scarcity of suitably trained personnel in Islamic banking, the Institute pioneered a Post Graduate Diploma Course by distance learning in the early 1990s.

Two factors led the Institute to develop a Post Graduate Diploma in Islamic banking and Insurance.

The first was the absence of any institution tailored to produce personnel well-versed in the principles and concepts of Islamic banking and in turn, meet the second, shortage of these personnel in the market place

The Post Graduate Diploma of the Institute has made a positive contribution to Islamic banking by equipping students with a comprehensive understanding of the concept and operation of this system.

The course is principally intended for graduates or individuals who have relevant work experience with the purpose of educating and training for a career in Islamic finance. The course may also be of interest to eligible students who simply wish to have an understanding of the underlying concepts and implementation of Shari’ah-compliant financial transactions.

Devised by a team of Islamic financial experts, and geared towards developing the ability to understand the principles governing Islamic finance, the course aims to equip individuals with a means of supporting the growth of this sector from whichever capacity he or she chooses, be it as a banker, academic or a discerning client.

The lessons for the course are written by Islamic Financial experts and scholars in the field of Islamic banking and finance. These were then checked for technical accuracy and compliance with the Shari’ah. The lessons were then edited by a professional editor and a proof reader. The contents of the course material are constantly under review.

UK's Durham University, has accorded recognition to the Institute's Post Graduate diploma course as an entry qualification to the University's Research MA as well as their modules on Islamic economics and Shari’ah-compliant finance. Informing the Institute of the recognition, Profs. Rodney Wilson, Head of the University's Centre for Middle East and Islamic studies, commended the Institute's post-graduate diploma course and described it as "well prepared, clearly setup and invaluable to students"

The Institute’s objective is for further accreditation in future by other leading universities and awarding bodies as well as recognition by financial institutions engaged in Islamic banking and finance. In order to make the course available to the maximum number of people, it is run on the increasingly popular "distance learning" method. This method is not only used by open universities around the world, but is also used by many conventional universities.

In the "distance learning" course, the student need not attend formal classroom lectures, but can study the course material, specially prepared by experts, in the privacy of his own home and at his own pace and convenience. This flexibility enables people who are employed full-time to pursue the course without the need to give up their work commitments or business.

The progress of the students is monitored by a tutor through periodic question papers which he answers at home and returns to the tutor by email or post. On successful completion of the course, students are awarded the Institute's "Diploma in Islamic Banking and Insurance".

On successful completion of the course, successful students are awarded the Institute’s Post-Graduate Diploma in Islamic Banking and Insurance by the Institute and also made an Associate Fellow of the Institute.
